Who Cares About Recycling?
Recycling helps conserve important raw materials and protects natural habitats for the future. When we recycle, used materials are converted into new products, reducing the need to consume natural resources. If used materials are not recycled, new products are made by extracting fresh, raw materials from the Earth, through mining and forestry. As recycling saves energy it also reduces greenhouse gas emissions, which helps to tackle climate change. Current UK recycling is estimated to save more than 18 million tonnes of CO2 a year - the equivalent of taking 5 million cars off the road! Doesn’t Everything go to Landfill? Actually, No. More than 95% of recyclable material collected is recycled. All the paper for newspapers in this country is made from 100% recycled paper. In the UK we recycle around 50% of container glass (like bottles and jars) which is double that from 5 years ago. Once we’ve sorted materials they are sold to reprocessing companies who turn them back into raw materials.
